The easiest way to identify flies is where they are on your animals. The most common pest fly is the non-biting House Fly. These are “filth flies” as they feed and breed on almost any rotting organic matter like manure, spoiled feed, garbage, etc. You will find these flies going for the moisture in the eyes, but they can be anywhere on your animals. Fly Predators can control this fly. For House Flies use Odor and Sticky Traps.
The second most common fly around horses and the most bothersome is the Biting Stable Fly. These are blood feeders and they hurt when they bite through the skin to feed. You will find these mostly on the fore legs and flanks of horses. If your horses are stomping and twitching it’s these bad boys (and girls). They reproduce in horse manure, but also in rotting vegetation like spoiled hay and feed, (like old, rained on hay at the bottom of a round bale ring), straw bedding with manure, grass clippings, compost piles, etc. Stable Flies can travel great distances so use of the proper trap is critical, as they may be coming from far beyond where you put Fly Predators, which do control Stable Flies. For this type of fly only a Stable Fly Trap will work.
