Rider size and weight

  • Denny Emerson posted a picture of himself riding Renie Smoke, who is 15.1, and talked about whether the size of riders and the horses they rode mattered and how it mattered, beyond aesthetics.

Does it matter? And how do you know if a horse is comfortable carrying a particular rider, who may appear "too big" for the horse?

  • I've always been taught that it is breed dependent, So a hardy native type - lets say a traditional or a welsh can carry a greater weight than for example an arab. I have friends with a pony for their kids , 12/13hh types who are big weight carriers and although the mums look tall on them and the legs may dangle they will ride them to keep the horses fit and well schooled.
